Japan Student Loan Bond Hits Record Coupon

Japan Student Services Organization set the terms for a two‑year bond that will pay a record‑high coupon of 1.689%. This rate surpasses the 1.469% coupon paid in its May offering and marks the highest level since the organization’s first bond sale in 2004. The pricing was announced by lead manager SMBC Nikko Securities Inc., which highlighted the increase as a reflection of current market conditions for student‑loan‑related debt.

The new coupon tops all previous JSSO bond coupons, underscoring a shift in borrowing costs for the agency that funds higher‑education loans in Japan. Market observers note that the rise aligns with broader trends in the yen‑denominated bond market, where investors have demanded higher yields amid shifting monetary policy expectations. The two‑year maturity remains unchanged from the earlier issue, keeping the investment horizon consistent for participants.

By securing a record coupon, JSSO aims to attract sufficient investor demand while meeting its financing needs for student loan programs. The transaction adds to the growing list of sovereign‑linked issuances that have tested higher yield levels in 2026, signaling confidence in the creditworthiness of Japan’s student‑loan sector despite the elevated cost of borrowing.
