Hormuz Closure Fills Gulf Oil Storage

Saudi Arabia's oil storage facilities are rapidly filling as the Strait of Hormuz effectively remains closed to shipping, creating significant supply chain disruptions, according to geospatial analytics firm Kayrros. The Ju'aymah terminal on Saudi Arabia's east coast was quickly running out of spare capacity as of March 1, while four of six tanks at the Ras Tanura refinery sit full following attacks by Iran this week.

Iraq has begun shutting oil production at its largest fields due to the Hormuz closure, with the Basrah terminal holding less than two days of export capacity, Kayrros co-founder Antoine Halff revealed. The second-largest OPEC producer faces structural vulnerabilities with extremely limited storage tanks relative to its output levels, threatening to exacerbate global supply constraints.

Across five Arab Gulf producers, aggregate onshore storage capacity totals approximately 350 million barrels, with observed crude stockpiles reaching about 175 million barrels as of March 1. Halff warned that operational capacity rarely exceeds 80% of nameplate levels, meaning storage infrastructure will soon reach maximum capacity if the Hormuz blockade persists.
