Colombia LNG Rationing Amid Port Shutdown

Colombia's government is urging schools and businesses to operate remotely for several days starting next week as the nation braces for natural gas rationing. This measure is in response to planned maintenance at the country's sole liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal, SPEC.

The shutdown of the SPEC terminal, located in the Caribbean port city of Cartagena, is expected to last for 18 days. During this period, Colombia will rely on its domestic natural gas production. However, concerns remain about potential shortages, particularly in the densely populated interior.

To mitigate the impact, the government has advised citizens to reduce their natural gas consumption. This includes limiting the use of gas stoves, water heaters, and other appliances. The remote work and learning recommendations are part of a broader effort to conserve energy and ensure a stable supply for essential services.

This situation highlights Colombia's dependence on imported LNG and the vulnerability of its energy infrastructure. The government is exploring options to diversify its energy sources and enhance energy security in the future.
