Casinos Pivot to Experiences to Attract Gen Z

Casinos are rebranding to attract Gen Z, moving away from dark, smoky gambling halls toward experiential destinations with natural light, upscale dining, and social spaces. New developments, including one by Steve Cohen, emphasize outdoor amenities, while operators like Penn Entertainment Inc. invest heavily in renovations—$360 million for the Hollywood Casino Aurora near Chicago.

The shift responds to changing habits: a 2025 Trans Union survey shows Gen Z gambles more than older generations but prefers digital platforms. Half of U.S. men ages 18-49 hold accounts with DraftKings Inc. or FanDuel, per Siena Research. "Younger audiences want something more social and community-oriented," says Penn CMO Jennifer Weissman.

Renovations feature celebrity chefs like Giada De Laurentiis, local art, and entertainment—strategies analyst Jordan Bender calls "mouse traps" to increase spending. Gaming floors now occupy roughly 40% of regional casinos, down from 60%. As designer Nathan Peak notes, Gen Z asks "What can we do tonight?" not "Let's go gambling."
