Australia Household Spending Surges Past Estimates

Australia’s household spending rose more than anticipated in July, providing further evidence of solid demand in the economy even after three interest-rate rises earlier this year. Spending advanced 1.1% from the prior month, almost four times economists’ estimate of a 0.3% gain, Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed Thursday. From a year earlier, it surged 7% compared with a forecast 5.7%.

The data suggests consumer resilience despite monetary tightening, reinforcing expectations that the central bank may maintain a cautious stance on further rate adjustments.
