The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced a landmark agreement to provide egg freezing and fertility treatment for its players. The deal, struck with the Tambre clinic in Madrid and running until 2029, covers all national team members, including the futsal squad, referees, and assistants. RFEF president Rafael Louzán called it a "comprehensive and pioneering benefit" for all federation employees.

This initiative follows a direct request from players, led by Barcelona midfielder Alexia Putellas, who stressed the difficulty of balancing motherhood with a football career. "The federation understands that you are serving your country in a way that runs counter to your biological clock," Putellas told Spanish outlet El País. The move builds on recent measures allowing players to travel with their children during major tournaments, a policy extended to the men's team during their successful World Cup campaign in North America.

However, the announcement has drawn criticism. Spanish triple jumper Ana Peleteiro-Compañón questioned the underlying motives on Instagram, asking whether the measure truly supports motherhood or simply pressures women to delay family plans. Her remarks highlight ongoing debates about fertility support in women's sport.

Spain, current world champions in both men's and women's football, will look to defend their women's title at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. The federation's proactive stance on work-life balance sets a new benchmark, though it remains to be seen how other national associations respond.
