For months, tech blogs referred to Apple's rumored foldable iPhone as iPhone Ultra. However, the device launched as iPhone Duo, a name accurately predicted by Daring Fireball's John Gruber in April. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman had floated iPhone Ultra in March, noting many Apple employees used that nickname.

Former Macworld reporter Filipe Espósito also cited a source predicting the Ultra name. Gurman ultimately confirmed the Duo branding shortly before the announcement. Apple avoided the Ultra moniker because the device, featuring a 7.6-inch inner display, lacks features like a dedicated Telephoto camera, Face ID, and an Action button found on standard models.

The company has used Duo branding previously for PowerBook laptops and the MagSafe Charger. Apple still utilizes Ultra branding for the Apple Watch, CarPlay, and M-series chips. With a rumored 20th-anniversary iPhone in development, the Ultra name may yet return.

For now, the iPhone Ultra rumor is dead.
