On July 8, 2026, a massive outage struck Australia's largest mobile network operator, Telstra. Voice calls failed, text messages were lost, and even emergency calls to triple-zero were disrupted. The ripple effects extended to trains, payment terminals, ticketing systems, and EV chargers. Remarkably, no networks were attacked, and no fiber was cut. All systems had electrical power. The root cause was a single GPS receiver in Melbourne, which, after scheduled maintenance, incorrectly believed the year was 2006. This erroneous time signal was propagated across the network, causing widespread failure.

Telstra commissioned an independent review from Technology Audit Partners (TAP). The report highlights that this type of failure could appear in many critical services we depend on to keep people alive. Modern mobile communication relies heavily on precision time. Networks use Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) or Time Division Duplex (TDD) to separate data. TDD, used in most 5G spectrum, requires every cell to switch directions in step. If a cell's clock drifts, it transmits data into its neighbor's receive window, causing the network to jam itself. The incident serves as a stark lesson that while time is a design choice, it is not given the consideration it deserves.
