Pierre Royal edged ahead in the final strides to win the bet365 Cambridgeshire at Newmarket, becoming the first Irish-trained winner of the race this century. Trained by Adrian Mc Guinness and ridden by Mikey Sheehy, the 33-1 shot narrowly defeated Jack Channon's Crest Of Fire, ridden by Tom Marquand. Both horses came from the far-side group, but Pierre Royal stalked Crest Of Fire throughout and surged late to win. Altareq finished third for Jim Goldie and Lauren Young, while favourite Gavriel placed fourth. Mc Guinness praised the horse's adaptability to better ground and credited Sheehy's tactical ride. The decision to enter the race was made only last Monday, and the horse, purchased for 48,000 guineas, has proven consistent and low-maintenance. Mc Guinness highlighted Sheehy's skill, noting his previous success in the Galway Mile.
