History-making goals from teenagers Mathis Albert and Julian Hall propelled a youthful United States men's national team to a 4-2 win over Chile in Tuesday's friendly in St. Louis. It was the second-straight four-goal display for the U.S. as a new-look roster backed up a 4-1 rout of Peru on Saturday and continued to sow seeds of optimism following this summer's disappointing round-of-16 World Cup exit. At 17 years, 131 days, Borussia Dortmund forward Albert became the youngest scorer in USMNT history when he put a cap on the scoring in second-half stoppage time.

That followed another milestone goal in the second half for Hall. The 18-year-old New York Red Bulls striker, who found the net on his debut at the weekend, became the youngest player to score in his first two USMNT appearances when he headed in a Giovanni Reyna cross in the second half, less than three minutes after Chile had taken the lead at Energizer Park. Chris Richards later headed home a Sebastian Berhalter corner to put the U.S. in front before Albert's late impact off the bench.

Berhalter had given the U.S. a first-half lead, following a fine team move and a clever stepover from Hall. Berhalter had also scored in the win over Peru and the Middlesbrough midfielder now has three goals and three assists in his last five appearances for the U.S. There was evidence, too, of some unsurprising growing pains for a young U.S. roster, especially defensively. Chile, which missed the 2026 World Cup after finishing in last place in South American qualifying, punished those U.S. deficiencies with goals either side of halftime through Diego Ulloa and Maximiliano Gutiérrez.

As he continues to look to the future following the 2026 World Cup, coach Mauricio Pochettino named the youngest starting lineup of his tenure, and youngest since January 2023, at an average age of 23 years, 25 days. The generational change was evident ahead of kickoff as 38-year-old World Cup captain Tim Ream announced his retirement in his hometown. While Pochettino waits to make a decision over the next permanent captain, Antonee Robinson took the armband for the first time.

The Fulham defender was the only player in the lineup with more than 50 caps, while six players -- Hall, Chris Brady, Adri Mehmeti, Neil Pierre, Brooklyn Raines and Frankie Westfield started for the USMNT for the first time. Of those first-time starters, Hall most caught the eye and might have got on the scoresheet in the first half but shot over after rounding the opposition goalkeeper when sent through by Berhalter. It was the impressive former Vancouver Whitecaps man who broke the deadlock in the 37th minute.

After a neat interchange between Sergiño Dest and Reyna, Dest played the ball across the face of the penalty box, Hall let the ball run and Berhalter continued his rich vein of scoring form with a clinical first-time finish. The goal had come during the U.S.' worst spell of the match, with Chile hitting the woodwork twice in quick succession only minutes earlier. It was no great surprise, then, that Chile went into halftime level.

Brady failed to make good contact after coming out for a corner and the U.S. defense was unable to clear the ball before Ulloa slammed the ball into the net. Brady was withdrawn shortly after at halftime as Pochettino took the chance to hand a debut to Nashville SC goalkeeper Brian Schwake.
