Former footballer Joey Barton will remain in custody until his trial in 2027 after a bail application was denied. The 44‑year‑old from Widnes, Cheshire, faces charges of grievous bodily harm with intent over an alleged attack on 51‑year‑old Kevin Lynch at Fairway, Huyton, on 8 March. Judge David Potter adjourned the trial to 8 March 2027 and refused Barton’s renewed bail, ordering him to stay in HMP Liverpool.

Barton appeared via videolink, nodding as he was remanded. The incident is said to have occurred after Barton and Lynch had been drinking at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club, leaving Lynch with serious eye injuries. Lynch, a former non‑league manager and founder of the special education school Nex Gen Academy, is central to the case.

The trial is expected to last two weeks. Barton’s career includes one England cap and stints with Manchester City, Queens Park Rangers, Newcastle, Rangers, Burnley and Marseille.
