Shopping for a new router involves navigating technical jargon like dual-band and tri-band. Dual-band routers operate on two bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Tri-band routers add a third band — traditionally a second 5GHz band, or a new 6GHz band in newer Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 models. Each band acts like a highway lane: 2.4GHz offers the longest range and best wall penetration but slower speeds and more interference from devices like microwaves and Bluetooth. 5GHz is faster and less crowded with shorter range. The 6GHz band is the fastest and least congested but has the shortest range and limited device support. A faster band doesn't guarantee faster internet; your ISP plan sets the speed limit, while the router distributes traffic efficiently.

Tri-band routers excel in capacity, providing more bandwidth for simultaneous downloads and uploads without slowdowns. However, most households don't need one. A "network-busy" home involves five-plus people constantly streaming 4K, gaming, and video calling — not just many connected devices. Even then, a high-quality dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with a strong internet plan can often handle the load if devices are properly sorted across bands.

Tri-band routers truly shine in mesh networks. The third band can be dedicated to backhaul — communication between mesh nodes — leaving the other two bands free for devices. In dual-band mesh setups, node-to-node traffic competes with device traffic, causing congestion.
