SymOntoClay: 11-Year Journey in NPC Behavior Language

An independent developer has unveiled SymOntoClay, a multi-paradigm programming language dedicated to describing NPC behavior, following an 11-year development cycle. Initially conceived in May 2014 as a tool for a Fallout-style Action/RPG, the project shifted focus from game development to the core engineering challenge of creating a highly expressive, human-readable language. SymOntoClay integrates rarely applied techniques like fuzzy logic and logic programming—similar to Prolog—directly into its syntax, allowing for compact and powerful imperative code.

The developer, who prioritized programming over communication, has now released the MIT-licensed code on GitHub alongside a project website and White Paper. Current capabilities allow for the description of simple NPC behavior, with future development focused on Unity integration, debugging tools, and creating a playable demo. This release marks the project's formal introduction to the wider developer community, moving it from personal notes to an open-source initiative.
