Shopify: Monetize Sold-Out Product Pages

Many merchants mistakenly delete or archive sold-out product pages, wasting valuable search engine traffic. A smarter approach involves reconfiguring these pages to showcase in-stock alternatives. By keeping the URL live and optimizing the content, you can intercept visitors arriving from search results and guide them toward available products. This strategy turns a dead end into a revenue opportunity.

Start by creating a new page template in the Shopify Theme Editor named "Sold-out-1." Add a product collection section featuring related items, perhaps from the same brand, with a helpful title like "Products That Might Fit Your Needs." This immediately provides visitors with relevant options instead of an empty page.

To improve visibility, strip away unnecessary elements. Remove the buy button, variant picker, quantity selector, and subscription widgets since the item is unavailable. Keep the title, images, price, and description for SEO purposes. Displaying the price with a "sold-out" label maintains context and helps the page rank for those specific search terms.

Consider adding an email signup form for back-in-stock notifications to capture leads. For different product categories, duplicate your sold-out template and assign new collections. Finally, assign the new template to specific out-of-stock products via the product editor's "Theme Template" dropdown. This systematic approach maximizes the value of every page visit.
