MSUthemes: Standardizing Data Viz Colors

Michigan State University staff have released MSUthemes, a new package for R and Python that standardizes data visualization colors. The tool addresses a common workflow problem: when analysts leave projects, their replacement's charts often look slightly different, creating a messy final report. By providing pre-built MSU and Big Ten color palettes, the packages ensure every graph looks professionally consistent, regardless of who created it.

Developed by the Office of the Vice Provost for Enrollment and Academic Strategic Planning, these packages build on the framework of the earlier RSSthemes project. They include MSU's Spartan Green and white, plus palettes for all 18 Big Ten Conference schools. This allows researchers to easily compare data across institutions without worrying about clashing colors or fonts. The goal is to remove friction from collaborative academic work.

Ultimately, consistent theming helps stakeholders focus on the data rather than adjusting to new visual styles. The packages support accessibility standards and integrate with standard tools like ggplot2 and matplotlib. By investing in this infrastructure early, organizations reduce the time spent on manual formatting and maintain credibility with professional presentation standards.
