EU Mandates USB‑C Laptop Charging from 2026

From 28 April 2026 the European Union will enforce its Common Charger rule, obliging all new laptops to accept power via USB‑C. The move aims to curb electronic waste and let users reuse existing adapters. Manufacturers must ship notebooks without a bundled charger, shifting the purchase focus to a charging ecosystem.

Enterprises such as Genese customers now need to audit their power supplies. A notebook’s wattage—65 W for ultrabooks, 90‑140 W for workstations—must match the output of available USB‑PD adapters, preferably USB‑PD 3.1 for higher loads. Cable choice matters; only E‑marked cables support 240 W, while standard cords cap at 60 W.

Guidance advises buying dedicated GaN adapters or high‑capacity multi‑port units and confirming dock or monitor PD ratings before rollout. Companies should classify laptops by class, define required wattage, and treat adapters, cables and docks as separate line items. By 2028 the EU plans an ecodesign rule tightening external‑supply efficiency, cementing the shift.
