Ducks Match Carlsson's $90M Offer

The Anaheim Ducks have matched the Philadelphia Flyers' record $90 million offer sheet for center Leo Carlsson, securing their franchise cornerstone through the 2026-27 season. This deal makes Carlsson the highest-paid player in NHL history with an $18 million annual average value, surpassing Kirill Kaprizov's previous record. The Ducks opted to retain Carlsson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, rather than accept four first-round picks from the Flyers.

Carlsson took a significant step last season, posting 29 goals and 38 assists in 70 games. His on-ice performance metrics, including a 53.4% expected goals share with him on the ice, indicate his growing impact. Despite the record-setting contract, the Ducks still face significant challenges. They recently signed defenseman Pavel Mintyukov to a five-year, $36 million deal and must now address a contract for Cutter Gauthier, who is expected to command over $10 million annually.

The Ducks' financial flexibility is now tight, with just over $9 million in cap space remaining and other roster needs, particularly on defense. This move signals Anaheim's commitment to building around Carlsson, but general manager Pat Verbeek has substantial work ahead to construct a competitive roster.
