Google DeepMind has opened a new research lab in Singapore, positioning itself to drive AI development across the Asia‑Pacific. The move follows a doubling of the APAC team last year and taps Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0, which champions openness to global talent. Researchers will focus on linguistic inclusivity, Gemini’s core capabilities, and region‑specific applications for local innovation in Asia.

Singapore’s government partners—GovTech, the Cyber Security Agency, and IMDA—have launched an AI agent sandbox to test autonomous solutions in public services. Meanwhile, AI Singapore’s Project Aquarium supplies open data for Southeast Asian languages, enabling SEA‑LION v4, a multimodal model tuned to regional cultural nuances. These collaborations showcase how DeepMind’s models can adapt to local contexts for innovation and growth today.

DeepMind also partners with A*STAR and the National Neuroscience Institute to apply AlphaFold in Parkinson’s research, linking immunology to neurodegeneration and opening avenues for earlier diagnosis. In education, Singaporean students receive a free year of the Google AI Pro Plan, while Gemini Academy expands AI literacy through IMDA’s Digital Office. These initiatives underline the lab’s commitment to tangible regional impact.
