Creating Striking Grayscale Images with S-Curves

A developer transformed Caravaggio's 'Calling of Saint Matthew' into grayscale to explore advanced image processing techniques. The initial attempt using a standard luminance conversion produced a flat, uninspiring result. This simple method extracts brightness values but lacks the dramatic contrast that makes the painting compelling, prompting a search for more sophisticated tools.

The tutorial then tested a Lightness Threshold tool, which pushed all pixels to pure black or white. While this maximized contrast, it sacrificed all mid-tone detail, creating a harsh, posterized effect. The extreme binary output proved too aggressive, highlighting the need for a balanced approach that preserves texture while enhancing visual impact.

The solution came from applying an S-Curve adjustment, a mathematical function that redistributes tonal values. By compressing mid-tones and expanding darks and lights, the curve increased separation between shadows and highlights without losing detail. BrushCue's High Contrast Grayscale tool implements this, delivering a striking result that honors Caravaggio's masterful use of chiaroscuro.
