Welsh Rugby Union Eyes Entry into England’s Top Women’s League

Welsh Rugby Union has signalled a clear ambition to field a team in England’s premier women's league. The move follows the entry of Leicester and Trailfinders into the PWR three years ago, a step that has opened doors for clubs across the UK. Head coach Sean Lynn, a former Gloucester‑Hartpury champion, backs the bid today.

Currently, Wales fields Brython Thunder and Gwalia Lightning in the Celtic Challenge alongside Irish and Scottish teams, but only 28 of its 38‑strong Six Nations squad ply their trade in the PWR. The league’s reputation for attracting top talent and higher revenue streams makes it a coveted destination for Welsh players to compete internationally there.

If the bid succeeds, the new side would likely be based at Cardiff’s Arms Park, home to the national women and age‑grade teams. A Cardiff franchise would offer a local fan base and could draw sizeable crowds, boosting the sport’s profile in Wales and providing a pathway for domestic talent to compete at the highest level of women's rugby today.

Sean Lynn, who steered Gloucester‑Hartpury to three consecutive titles, noted that Welsh representation already thrives in the PWR. He believes a Welsh club would strengthen the league’s diversity and attract international stars. The union’s ownership of Cardiff Rugby gives it a solid infrastructure to launch the venture and secure its future for the national squad and the sport's growth in Wales and beyond this year across Europe today.
