Leicester and Trailfinders recently joined the Premiership Rugby (PWR) top tier three years ago, alongside Gloucester-Hartpury, Bristol, Sale, Exeter, Saracens, Harlequins, and Loughborough. All these clubs are backed by men's Premiership sides except Trailfinders, linked to Ealing. Now, clubs across the UK and Ireland have until April 30th to express interest in joining the league for 2026-27. While expansion beyond that is undecided, the PWR confirms the league will consider new entrants alongside existing franchises.

To join, clubs must meet strict criteria: invest at least £1.2 million annually in their rugby programme, field a squad of 45-55 players, and provide facilities meeting PWR competition, broadcast, and training standards. Currently, only Bath and Newcastle Red Bulls among the 10 men's Premiership teams lack a top-flight women's side. Bath's CEO has previously discussed collaborative talks about establishing a women's team. This expansion move comes after the Rugby Football Union scrapped promotion and relegation from the men's Premiership, requiring future joining clubs to demonstrate commitment to the women's game.

This invitation signals a potential significant growth phase for women's rugby in England, aiming to increase competition depth and professional opportunities. The PWR's criteria ensure new clubs have the financial backing and infrastructure necessary to compete at the highest level.
