Welsh Fire's 2026 Shake-Up: Joe Root and Big Spending Signal Title Push

Welsh Fire are undergoing their most dramatic transformation yet as they prepare for the 2026 Hundred season. After five years without a title and finishing bottom of both men's and women's standings in 2025, the franchise has embarked on a complete rebuild with Sanjay Govil's £40m investment fueling a spending spree.

Joe Root's £240,000 signing headlines the men's recruitment, alongside Jordan Cox (£300,000) and captain Phil Salt. Root brings Test cricket pedigree as the second-highest run-scorer in history, while Cox arrives as last year's MVP after topping batting charts with 367 runs. The women's team secured Sophie Devine for £210,000, fresh from leading New Zealand to T20 World Cup glory in 2024.

The revamped squad aims to balance star power with local appeal. Newport's Sophie Smale returns for the women's team, while Ben Kellaway and Jersey's Asa Tribe add Welsh connections to the men's side. With Michael Klinger taking a dual coaching-recruitment role and only two players retained from last season's squads, Welsh Fire are betting big that this overhaul will finally deliver the franchise's first Hundred title.
