Thierno Barry has transformed from a struggling debut season into Everton's indispensable striker. After scoring eight goals in 41 appearances last season, the 24-year-old forward matched that tally in just 12 games this campaign. On Monday night, Barry scored against Newcastle for the second time in five days, earning a deserved win at St James' Park in the Premier League. His eight goals across all competitions this season place him behind only Erling Haaland among Premier League players.
Barry's revival is particularly vital for Everton, who relied on him as their only recognised senior striker after Beto's transfer to Fiorentina. The Frenchman endured a rocky start, managing only one shot in his first 16 Everton games and even breaking down in a private training session last season. His recent form contrasts sharply with that low point, highlighted by a celebratory dance after Monday's goal.
Despite the joy, the strike courted controversy. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle told BBC Sport there was "a clear foul on Fabian Schar" in the build-up. Barry told Sky Sports he is happy to help the team and eager to enjoy the season more than last year. His journey from nightmare debut to becoming a hero for the Toffees marks his best run of form since joining from Villarreal last summer.
