Vaughan slams England's selector delay ahead of NZ Test

Former England captain Michael Vaughan blasted the board’s delay in naming a new national selector as “ridiculous” on the Stick to Cricket podcast. He said the role should have been filled by 1 April so the appointee could start scouting and reporting immediately, especially with a busy domestic calendar and an imminent overseas series.

Luke Wright announced his resignation on 22 January and formally left the role after the T20 World Cup concluded in March. This week the ECB held interviews for the vacancy, even as the County Championship entered its fourth round and England prepares to name its squad for the first Test against New Zealand in two weeks.

Vaughan’s outburst underscores growing frustration within the camp; without a selector, player scouting and squad balance risk being compromised ahead of the New Zealand tour. The ECB must finalize the appointment within days, or risk further criticism and a disjointed preparation period for the side heading into the series.

Without a selector in place, the coaching staff must shoulder talent identification duties, a strain that could affect the composition of the squad due to limited insight on form and fitness. As England finalises the 15‑man roster for the New Zealand opening Test, the vacancy looms as a tangible distraction.
