Twitch Streamer Buys Prem Rugby Rights for France

A Twitch streamer with 11,000 subscribers has acquired the rights to broadcast the rest of the Premiership Rugby season in France. Marliere, who described his motivation as stemming from frustration over limited access to the competition, told L'Equipe he expects to lose money on the venture but hopes increased visibility will lead to profitable side projects.

This move follows a trend of independent streamers broadcasting sports content for free. Mark Goldbridge's That's Football channel, with 1.5 million subscribers, shows Bundesliga matches, while the Pro D2 second-tier French rugby competition is available in the UK through FR-UK. Prem Rugby itself has found success with its own streaming efforts, attracting six-figure audiences for Gallagher Premiership Cup matches between Leicester and Northampton, and Gloucester and Bath.

Prem Rugby's head of broadcast, Ollie Lewis, emphasized the league's global reach, noting broadcasts in over 150 territories. The organization aims to become the world's best rugby league and is committed to innovative broadcast experiences. Marliere's acquisition represents an unconventional approach to expanding rugby's audience in France, potentially disrupting traditional broadcasting models while increasing accessibility for French fans.
