Matthew Stevens successfully navigated the qualifying rounds, defeating former champion Stuart Bingham 10-7 to earn his passage back to the 2026 World Snooker Championship. Bingham, currently 17th in the rankings, needed to qualify after missing the automatic top-16 cutoff, but fell short against the 48-year-old Welshman. Stevens expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating he proved he can still compete at the highest level.

Stevens, a two-time former finalist who last appeared at the Crucible in 2022, capitalised after Bingham missed a significant opportunity in the mid-match stages. Bingham had been poised for a maximum 147 break before missing the 12th black, ending his run at 89. This lapse allowed Stevens to seize control, rattling off four consecutive frames to move within one of closing out the contest.

Beyond the main upset, Iran’s Hossein Vafaei secured his fifth consecutive final appearance despite feeling unwell during his 10-4 victory over Gao Yang. Furthermore, 22-year-old Antoni Kowalski made history, becoming the first Polish player ever to reach the main event finals at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ following a tense 10-8 win over Jamie Jones.

These qualification results set the stage for the final eight spots to be decided later this week. The main draw will pit the qualifiers against the established top 16 seeds in Sheffield, beginning on Saturday. The tournament promises high drama with the presence of 2023 champion Luca Brecel still awaiting his next opponent.
