Shaun Edwards Eyes Southern Hemisphere Rugby Role

Shaun Edwards has revealed his ambition to coach one of the southern hemisphere's rugby giants after the 2027 Rugby World Cup with France. The 59-year-old, who helped France win a Grand Slam in 2022 and back-to-back Six Nations titles in 2025 and 2026, says he's keen to expand his coaching horizons beyond Europe.

Edwards, a former Great Britain rugby league captain, has enjoyed a trophy-laden coaching career since joining Wasps before moving to Wales in 2008. During his 12-year stint with Wales, he won four Six Nations Championships and developed a reputation as one of the game's premier defence coaches. His Welsh defence famously went four games without conceding a try on the way to Six Nations glory in 2013.

Despite regular calls for the Rugby Football Union to bring him home to coach England, Edwards says he never received an offer from his native country. He notes that the game has evolved significantly, with World Rugby favouring attacking play and changing rules to increase scoring. Edwards now considers 21-22 points conceded a good defensive performance, compared to the under-20 points benchmark of previous years.
