Rico Verhoeven vs Oleksandr Usyk: How Jason Statham sparked an unlikely title shot

Rico Verhoeven, a Dutch kickboxing legend with just one professional boxing bout, has landed an unlikely WBC world title shot against heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in Egypt. The chain started when Verhoeven bumped into Jason Statham in Las Vegas during the Alvarez-Crawford fight week in September 2024. Statham, a close ally of Saudi boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh, told Verhoeven he could beat everyone, and by the next morning had put his name forward and arranged the fight.

Verhoeven has trained under Peter Fury for over 15 years and sparred with Tyson Fury, Dillian Whyte, and Tom Aspinall. Fury says Verhoeven punches like a boxer. Away from the ring, Verhoeven's life has been shaped by a turbulent childhood in Bergen op Zoom, raised by a mother struggling with addiction before moving in with his father, who introduced him to combat sports.

The hardest part of switching sports has been adjusting to tempo. Kickboxing ends fast; boxing demands twelve rounds of patience. Verhoeven calls it an art now, and he knows exactly who to thank if he pulls off the upset near the pyramids: Statham. He told him he'd make history, and he intends to deliver.
