Raducanu draws Sierra in tough French Open opener

Emma Raducanu opens the French Open against Argentina’s clay‑court specialist Solana Sierra. The British No.1 sits outside the seeded spots after slipping to 37th in the world, while Sierra, ranked 64th, grew up on red dirt and recently stole a set from reigning champion Coco Gauff in Madrid. A win would pit Raducanu against 2024 runner‑up Jasmine Paolini in round two.

Britain’s other women, Katie Boulter and Francesca Jones, open against American wildcard Akasha Urhobo and Brazil’s 2023 semi‑finalist Beatriz Haddad Maia. Seeded Cameron Norrie meets Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, while Jacob Fearnley faces Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerúndolo with No.1 Jannik Sinner awaiting in round two. Sinner, on a 29‑match clay streak, becomes the favourite after Carlos Alcaraz’s wrist injury forced his withdrawal.

Raducanu’s recent résumé offers little optimism. A February virus limited her to two tournaments before a two‑month layoff; she returned in Strasbourg only to lose straight sets to Diane Parry. After parting with coach Francisco Roig, she rehired Andrew Richardson, the mind behind her 2021 US Open triumph. With persistent back problems and limited match‑play, a deep run at Roland Garros appears unlikely.
