Sara Cox, the world's first professional female rugby union referee, is retiring from international officiating. She made her debut in 2010 and officiated her 51st and final match last year in New Zealand's World Cup quarter-final win over South Africa at Sandy Park. Her career spanned five Women's Rugby World Cups.

Cox became centrally contracted by the RFU in 2016, officiating at the Commonwealth Games, Six Nations, and Women's WXV. She also refereed the rugby sevens finals at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. Her MBE in 2023 recognized her services to rugby union.

The Exeter official will continue refereeing in England's domestic leagues for both men's and women's clubs. RFU chief Bill Sweeney called her a pioneer who broke barriers. Her legacy is paving the path for future female officials worldwide.
