Welsh Fire are set to sign England batter Phil Salt as a direct signing for the 2026 The Hundred season. The 29-year-old opener, previously with Manchester Originals, is expected to command a top-tier salary. Fire officials view this as a major acquisition, noting strong competition for his services from other franchises.

Salt brings extensive global franchise experience, including the Indian Premier League, and boasts 1,540 runs at 38.50 in 50 T20 internationals. His recent one-year central contract with England underscores his value. The Hundred allows four direct signings per team before the March auction, making this move a strategic head start for the Cardiff-based side.

Fire also plan to involve former Australia captain Ricky Ponting in a strategic advisory role. He will not replace head coach Mike Hussey, despite initial speculation. Ponting currently coaches Punjab Kings in the IPL and Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket, bringing elite-level expertise to the Welsh franchise's new ownership structure.
