PGA Tour to adopt promotion‑relegation system in 2028

Former world number one Tiger Woods fronted a press conference at the Travelers Championship to unveil a two‑tier structure for the PGA Tour beginning in 2028. The top tier, dubbed the Championship Series, will feature 120‑player fields in 23 or 24 events from January to August, each offering at least $20m in prize money. The leading 90 finishers will retain their status.

Below the elite level sits the Challenger Series, running concurrently with minimum $4 million purses. Winning two events earns immediate promotion, rewarding emerging talent, while 20 players will move up at season’s end and four to six “last‑chance” tournaments give relegation‑threatened golfers a final shot. The tour’s strategic alliance with the DP World Tour remains under review, with possible autumn international opens pending.

Brian Rolapp said the revamp aims to boost fan interest and media revenue by rewarding performance and expanding venues. The season‑ending Tour Championship will shift to match‑play and rotate away from its long‑standing home at East Lake. With the framework set, the tour will enforce the new promotion‑relegation system for the 2028 season for global audiences.
