Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid stunned the Winter Olympics by confessing to an affair on live television moments after winning bronze in the 20km individual biathlon. The seven-time world champion, 28, admitted to cheating on his girlfriend three months ago, calling it 'my biggest mistake' during an emotional interview with Norway's state broadcaster NRK.

Laegreid, who won his first individual Olympic medal in Milan-Cortina, revealed he had told his girlfriend of six months about the affair, describing it as 'the worst week of my life.' The Norwegian athlete finished third behind fellow countryman Johan-Olav Botn, who won gold and dedicated his victory to late teammate Sivert Guttorm Bakken, found dead in December.

In the post-race news conference, Laegreid expressed hope that his public confession might help repair his relationship, saying he wanted to be 'a good role model' but must admit when he makes mistakes. The emotional moment overshadowed Botn's gold medal victory, with Laegreid apologizing for potentially ruining his teammate's celebration. Laegreid previously won gold in the relay at the 2022 Games, making this his second Olympic medal.
