Matt Utai, the former NRL player, was the target of a drive-by shooting in Sydney that left him with serious injuries. Four teenagers now face charges including accessory after the fact to shoot at with intent to murder after police linked them to the attack and subsequent arson incidents targeting Utai's family.

Utai, 44, underwent surgery for gunshot wounds to his leg and shoulder. Police recovered a white SUV used in the shooting, burned out nearby, and responded to additional incidents including shots fired at a home and arson attacks in multiple Sydney suburbs. Officers seized 1kg of cocaine during search warrants.

The 16-year-old suspect was refused bail with a court appearance scheduled for February 20. Two 19-year-old males also had bail refused, while an 18-year-old received conditional bail. Despite the violent attacks, police clarified Utai faces no suspicion of wrongdoing in the investigation.
