This autumn merit-table competition, dominated by fee-paying institutions like Sedbergh and Wellington College, now has a state champion. The achievement highlights a stark imbalance: while only 6.4% of English pupils attend independent schools, 63% of England's 2026 Six Nations squad were privately educated.

NSB's success is built on a decade-long, community-driven model. With an annual rugby budget well below £50,000 and unpaid coaches, the school leverages parent volunteers and local business support. Director of Rugby Phil Beaumont credits high-quality coaching for multiple teams and a culture where rugby is embedded six days a week. This pipeline feeds directly into the Northampton Saints academy, which has 19 NSB players in its under-18 set-up.

The school now chases a historic double, facing Epsom College in the Under-18 Continental Tyres Cup final at Twickenham.
