Willie Mullins secured his third consecutive Grand National win, courtesy of I Am Maximus, putting him in the esteemed company of the legendary Vincent O'Brien. This victory marks the Irish trainer's fourth overall in the Aintree marathon, equaling records held by Dockeray, Rimell, and Ginger McCain. Mullins expressed awe at being mentioned alongside O'Brien, calling the achievement 'off the charts' after a long wait for his first win in 2005.

Jockey Paul Townend steered the 9-2 favourite expertly through the field, making the decisive move near the Aintree elbow to overtake the frontrunners. I Am Maximus now becomes the first horse since Red Rum in 1977 to successfully defend the National title. Furthermore, carrying 11st 12lb, the horse became the first top-weight victor since Red Rum managed it in 1974.

Owner JP McManus also reached a record milestone, claiming his fourth Grand National win as an owner, thanks to the success of I Am Maximus. The bookmakers felt the sting, with Fred Done of Betfred terming the result a 'gladiatorial bloodbath' after heavy late support for the winner. The team effort, especially through a difficult winter, earned high praise from the victorious trainer.

Townend’s decision to ride I Am Maximus instead of stablemates paid dividends, cementing a surreal moment for the jockey, who grew up viewing riders as superheroes. Despite the massive £500,000 prize money, Mullins is set to lose the British Trainers' title this year to Dan Skelton, who surpassed the £4m mark in earnings.
