McGuinness blames inconsistency as Donegal fall to Dublin

Donegal’s All‑Ireland senior football campaign ended in extra‑time at Croke Park, as Dublin edged them 2‑26 to 2‑22. Michael Murphy’s last‑minute two‑point free forced the replay, but four black cards – including Murphy and Jason McGee – left Donegal shorthanded. Dublin’s bench supplied legs, widening the gap. Manager Jim McGuinness said the side “didn’t do enough” and blamed a lack of consistency for the loss.

Earlier in the season Donegal captured the National Football League and stunned Kerry in the group stage, yet a surprise Ulster defeat to Down and subsequent losses to Cork and Dublin revealed wavering form. McGuinness highlighted the new rules’ physical toll, estimating games are 30‑35% more intense, making squad rotation and injury management critical.

The defeat drops Donegal out of the championship while Dublin advances to the quarter‑final draw on Monday. McGuinness lamented the inability to keep enough healthy bodies on the pitch, noting every county faces the same challenge under the intensified format. The county board now faces pressure to rebuild a squad delivering consistency.
