McGregor Leg Injury Ends UFC 329 Return in 69 Seconds

Conor McGregor's highly anticipated UFC return ended in 69 seconds when he injured his right leg throwing an opening jump kick against Max Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas. The referee waved off the main event at 1:09 of the first round, awarding Holloway a TKO victory at T-Mobile Arena. McGregor, 37, immediately exited the Octagon without a post-fight interview, while UFC CEO Dana White stated doctors suspect a blown ACL.

The Irish star hadn't fought in over five years, sidelined by a broken leg, legal battles, and a toe injury that scrapped a 2024 bout with Michael Chandler. After a 9-1 UFC start with simultaneous featherweight and lightweight titles, McGregor went 1-3 with three stoppage losses — to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier twice — while pursuing a lucrative boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2017.

Holloway, 33, moved up to 170 pounds for the first time in his career. The Hawaiian had won 13 straight after losing to McGregor in 2013, capturing the featherweight title and the BMF belt with a last-second knockout of Justin Gaethje in 2024. "We have to run it back one more time for the boys," Holloway said, joking he had McGregor "weak in the knees."

The freak injury leaves McGregor's future uncertain at 37 with a suspect leg and diminishing returns. For Holloway, the hollow victory delays his welterweight ambitions while the UFC loses its biggest draw to another prolonged absence. A trilogy now hinges entirely on whether McGregor can survive another rehabilitation.
