Brendon McCullum has apologised for England's Test results after being dismissed on Sunday. Under his four‑year tenure the side lost seven of their last nine Tests, 19 of 38 overall, and failed to win a five‑match series against Australia or India. He will remain head coach of England's white‑ball teams until the 2027 50‑over World Cup.

McCullum said, “It’s a results business and, unfortunately, we weren’t able to get the results we wanted… I’ll put my hand up and wear that.” His exit follows Ben Stokes’ surprise retirement and a 4‑1 Ashes defeat, with a 2‑1 home loss to New Zealand sealing the decision. Off‑field issues – curfew breaches by Stokes, Gus Atkinson and others – added pressure, and McCullum accepted responsibility for the team culture.

England’s search for a new Test coach is under way, with ECB chief Richard Gould hinting the captaincy may be split. Potential successors include former England coach Andy Flower and ex‑New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming. Meanwhile, the white‑ball side, led by McCullum and rising star Harry Brook, sits atop the T20 rankings and prepares for a one‑day series against India at Edgbaston.
