Josh Kerr is targeting the men's mile world record at the London Diamond League on July 18. The Olympic 1500m medallist views this "career goal" as a chance to "bring the record home" after successfully reclaiming his indoor 3,000m title following injury setbacks that threatened his season.

Kerr's comeback journey includes recovering from a calf muscle tear during the final of his world title defense in Tokyo six months ago. With no outdoor world championship in 2026, the 28-year-old strategically shifts focus to the mile distance where he'll also seek Commonwealth gold on home soil just two weeks later.

"This sport needs moments," Kerr stated, emphasizing his clear objectives to give the record proper respect. Performing in front of a British crowd would make the attempt "extremely special" as he prepares to challenge Morocco's El Guerrouj's long-standing mark. Kerr believes he's "capable of going after these times" despite acknowledging it will be "a tough one."
