Kate O'Connor achieved her goal of winning a senior outdoor gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, securing Team Northern Ireland's first athletics gold since 1986. The 25-year-old heptathlete, who previously won silver at the World Championships and bronze at the European indoors in 2025, triumphed in Glasgow with a score of 6,569 points. Her victory came despite challenging weather conditions, particularly a difficult shot put event where she struggled with the rain.

However, O'Connor demonstrated resilience, winning her 200m heat and excelling in the javelin with a season's best throw of 52.85m. She secured the win with a strong performance in the final 800m event. England's Jade O’Dowda finished second, 291 points behind O'Connor.

O'Connor expressed satisfaction with her performance, acknowledging the challenges but celebrating the milestone gold medal.
