Russian-born Daria Kasatkina says she can "finally breathe" after gaining Australian citizenship. The world number 48, who has played as a neutral athlete since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, will now represent her new home at the Australian Open.

Kasatkina, who came out as gay in 2022 and hasn't returned to Russia, described the past season as mentally and emotionally draining. She ended her 2025 season early, citing a breaking point. This move allows her to compete without the political baggage of her past.

The 28-year-old will face Czech teenager Nikola Bartunkova in Melbourne. Playing before a home crowd for the first time, she expects to manage nerves but calls it a "good pressure." This represents a significant personal and professional reset for the former world number eight.
