Ireland rue missed chances in France defeat

Ireland's bid for a historic first win on French soil ended in disappointment as they fell 26-7 to France in Clermont. The Irish dominated the first half but failed to convert their dominance into points, with three tries - including two from hooker Cliodhna Moloney-MacDonald - ruled out by the officials.

France showed their clinical edge after the break, scoring through Carla Arbez, Anais Grando and Lea Champon to secure the bonus-point victory. Captain Erin King admitted it was "fine margins" while head coach Scott Bemand acknowledged the small details - exit kicks and touchline accuracy - that proved the difference against Les Bleues.

Despite the defeat, Ireland demonstrated they can compete with the world's top sides. Under Bemand, they've risen to fifth in the world rankings and beaten New Zealand and Australia in 2024. Former player Lindsay Peat questioned the substitution of Moloney-MacDonald in the 47th minute, calling it a "momentum killer." Ireland now aim to consolidate third position against Wales and Scotland.
