Ireland Lineup Revamp Ahead of Japan Clash

Ireland’s tour manager Andy Farrell has reshuffled his side for the Nations Championship showdown in Newcastle, bringing four players to their first Test appearances. Sean Jansen, Billy Bohan, Sam Illo, and Bryn Ward will debut as the squad prepares to face a Japan side that has never beaten Ireland since 2019.

Farrell’s changes follow a 33‑31 win over Australia and aim to tighten a unit that has already lost ten of eleven encounters with Japan, the last victory being 19‑12 in 2019. Tadhg Beirne will captain for the first time, while Ciaran Frawley pairs with Craig Casey at fly‑half. Ronan Kelleher earns a 50th cap in the front row, accompanied by Tom O'Toole and Thomas Clarkson, the latter scoring the decisive late try against Australia.

The bench will feature a largely inexperienced group, including Tom Stewart, Cormac Izuchukwu, and Nathan Doak. Ireland’s 41‑10 triumph over Japan in Dublin last year remains a benchmark, and the new lineup could restore confidence before the All Blacks encounter.

These debutants’ performances will test Farrell’s strategy and set the tone for Ireland’s remaining fixtures in the tournament.
