ICC launches pink ball trial to curb bad‑light interruptions

The International Cricket Council unveiled a trial that will allow the pink ball to replace the red ball when bad light threatens play in Test matches. Both sides must consent before the switch, meaning the opening Lord’s Test between England and New Zealand could see the change on Thursday. The move aims to curb the growing frustration of lost overs despite floodlights.

Last season, England lost more than half of the first day of the third Test against Sri Lanka to poor illumination, a scenario that broadcasters and fans alike decried. Former captain Michael Vaughan urged officials to simply switch to pink and keep the game moving, noting that no solution will satisfy every stakeholder.

The ICC did not set a trial length but pledged to work with the MCC on lighting research and to align international and franchise calendars. With 25 day‑night Tests played since 2015—only one in England—the experiment could reshape scheduling for marquee series such as the upcoming Ashes. Officials hope it will significantly reduce delays for fans.
