Half Marathon Prize Money After Course Error

Three athletes who were led off course while leading the US half marathon championship in Atlanta will receive compensation. Jess McClain, who was comfortably leading the women's race, along with Ednah Kurgat and Emma Hurley, were diverted when police responded to an emergency. The Atlanta Track Club announced they will award first-place prize money to McClain while Hurley and Kurgat will split second and third winnings.

Organizers explained that police assigned to mark the route had to respond to an "officer down" call, and replacement officers unfamiliar with the race's "unusual route" over a footbridge caused confusion. The lead vehicle followed a police motorcycle, believing the race was being rerouted. Despite acknowledging inadequate course marking, USA Track & Field had denied an appeal from the affected runners.

Molly Born won the race after leading runners were diverted, though selection for the World Road Running Championships remains open. The Atlanta Track Club stated, "We are responsible for the integrity of these championships," expressing regret that the top performers couldn't be recognized for their actual racing performance.
