Haiti's First Winter Paralympian: From Earthquake to Dolomites

Ralf Etienne's journey from earthquake survivor to Winter Paralympian embodies extraordinary resilience. The 36-year-old Haitian lost his left leg when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake collapsed his building in 2010, trapping him upside down for eight hours. Rather than despair, he vowed to dedicate his life to service.

Before the disaster, Etienne had built a media empire in Haiti by age 16, including his own magazine and radio show. The earthquake killed over 200,000 people and destroyed much of Haiti's infrastructure. After receiving a prosthetic leg in the US, he pursued humanitarian work, distributing 40,000 pairs of glasses and helping rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

Relocating from New York to London for weekend training with support from Bank of America, Etienne competed in the Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympics after just 80 days on snow. Though disqualified in his second run of the standing giant slalom, he achieved his dream of representing Haiti. 'Haiti has a skier. That's the most beautiful sentence I have heard in a long time,' he said. From earthquake rubble to the top of the Dolomites, Etienne's story proves that anything is possible and offers hope to disabled people worldwide.
