Greek sprinter Kristian Gkolomeev shattered the unofficial 50m freestyle record on the Enhanced Games opening day, touching the wall in 20.81 seconds. The time eclipses Cameron McEvoy's 20.88 set earlier this year, but world bodies refuse to ratify it because the event permits banned substances. Gkolomeev earned $250,000 for the win, plus a $1m bonus for the record officially today.

The competition featured 42 athletes, most of whom used FDA‑approved performance enhancers such as testosterone and anabolic steroids. World Aquatics dismissed the meet as a “circus built on shortcuts,” while the IOC and WADA branded it immoral and dangerous. British swimmers Ben Proud and Emily Barclay claimed podium spots but fell short of standing world marks in the global arena.

Organisers Aron D'Souza and Maximilian Martin, backed by investors like Peter Thiel, argue that transparent drug use mirrors hidden practices in elite sport and makes competition safer. Critics counter that legitimising doping undermines fair play and could trigger bans for participants. The Enhanced Games therefore remain an isolated, controversial showcase rather than a new sporting model today for future debates.
