Garbrandt Calls for UFC Fighter Support

Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is urging the promotion to provide better support for its fighters transitioning into retirement. Garbrandt, who is preparing for his 23rd fight at UFC 329 on Saturday, highlighted the financial realities many fighters face, particularly those at the entry level who earn between $12,000 and $20,000 per fight.

As independent contractors, UFC fighters do not receive benefits like pensions or long-term health insurance, a situation Garbrandt finds concerning as his own career nears its end. He expressed a desire for the UFC to offer more assistance with healthcare, insurance, and retirement plans like 401(k)s.

Garbrandt stated that many fighters feel compelled to compete even when injured due to financial necessity, a risk he hopes to avoid by retiring on his own terms. He believes enhanced support from the UFC would allow more fighters to leave the sport securely and avoid the financial uncertainty that follows their careers.
