France's Ice Dance Duo Faces Olympic Controversy

The ice dance competition at Milan-Cortina 2026 heads toward a dramatic conclusion with Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier Beaudry leading the standings by just 0.46 points over American champions Evan Bates and Madison Chock. Cizeron, the reigning Olympic gold medalist from Beijing 2022, formed this partnership last November after splitting from longtime partner Gabriella Papadakis.

Their technically flawless performance to Madonna's Vogue in the rhythm dance has positioned them for back-to-back Olympic golds. Since partnering, Cizeron and Fournier Beaudry have won four of five major competitions, including the 2026 European Championship in Sheffield. The duo's only defeat came at the Grand Prix Final, where they finished second to Chock and Bates, who have skated together since 2011.

Beyond the ice, both skaters face significant controversy. Fournier Beaudry gained French citizenship last November after her previous partner Nikolaj Sorensen received a six-year suspension following a sexual assault allegation. She has publicly supported Sorensen despite criticism from the anonymous complainant. Meanwhile, Cizeron faces legal action against Papadakis after she published a memoir describing their relationship as "controlling" and "unbalanced." The free dance on Wednesday night will determine Olympic medals, with the combined scores of both segments deciding the winners.
